Eugene Savage was commissioned in 1938 to make
"The Matson Murals" for the Matson Navigation Company.
The works, completed in 1940, were supposed to be
installed in the company's ships. However, with the advent
of World War II, Matson's liners were transformed into troop-
ships and the murals were placed in storage. The murals
were not publicly seen until 2014 in the Honolulu Museum of
Art's exhibition "Art Deco Hawa'i."
His finished murals, from which these six color lithographed
reproductions were made, are eight feet wide by four feet high.
These lithographs each have a title and story on the back side
of them and there are no center creases in these like the
completed menus have.
The paper has yellowed with age.
They were in storage and each of them have a hole, the
size of a pencil, on the bottom edge. They all have the
same slight tear on the top edge also.
If you framed or matted them, the damaged areas would
be covered.
It is estimated that over a quarter of a million Savage menu
covers were distributed between 1948 & 1956, and today, his
beautiful menu covers are highly prized by discerning collectors
of Hawaiian ephemera.
In 1951, Savage's genius was honored at a display of American
Lithographs at the Smithsonian Institute.
Eugene Savage, a native of Covington, Indiana, died in 1978,
at the age of 95.
